Earlier in the day, India looked set for a big total with Laxman scoring 54, Yuvraj scoring 62 and Dravid scoring 117, before Broad's hat-trick caused a batting collapse allowing the bowler to get 6 wickets for the innings, with Bresnan and Anderson both taking 2 wickets. England then lost Cook early for 5, having been caught off Sharma's bowling. Strauss and Bell (batting at 3 because of Trott's injured shoulder) saw England through to the close at 24-1.
